For the first time during the current recession, Oakland Unified School District school sites will likely have to lay off teachers. For the past few years, school sites have protected teachers in their budgets and enough teachers have voluntarily left OUSD to avoid layoffs.

I wanted to provide a fundraising update to my last blog post.  As of this afternoon, we have raised $1,112 towards our $5,000 goal.  Only $3,888 more to go before the April 2nd deadline.

The queen-size event of the week (so not-so-much under-the-radar) that you should be plugging into is Thursday's Day of Action to Defend Public Education.  Oakland's main event in this action is the downtown rally from 12-4, with feed-in marches coming from Laney College, Berkeley (at Sproul Plaza entrance), and Fruitvale Bart.  For more data, see Irene Florez' round-up of Bay Area events.
