ERA Art Bar was the spot on Friday, July 1, when the city of Oakland marketing department held a gathering for Oakland bloggers, techies, friends of the city and social media mavens to celebrate their new Facebook page, which has almost 3,000 likes after less than a month.

I'm honored to say that I've been invited to be part of an annual Stanford John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships program this coming week.  The topic of the event is “#Hashtagged: How Social Media are Revolutionizing the News" and the other speakers are from NPR, Google and Yahoo; we're going to be talking about the impact of social media on news, a subhect dear to my heart.

INOAK is proof that you don’t have to be based in San Francisco, Mountain View, or any of the other traditionally techy cities to be a cutting-edge media startup. Innovate Oakland consists of new media, social media, and design companies based in the Town and interested in adding “tech hotspot” to the list of cool things about Oakland.

This has been a year of exciting developments and of activity and service for Oakland.

I am proud to be part of such a dynamic and diverse melange that exists in this city and I am amazed by the energy and creativity I see everyday in Oakland.

For me, this has been a year of increasing involvement with people and events all over the city.
