There's a lot more vibrant color outside the Oakland Museum.

Oak Plaza, on Oak between Tenth and Eleventh Streets, is OMCA's main entrance and has a lot of concrete in need of decoration. The Oakland Standard - the museum's project arm for bringing in more contemporary art - commissioned a Grafiti Mural and called the event "Living Cncrete" on Saturday, January 21..

You’ve seen his art. You probably didn’t know it was him.

Maybe it was along Interstate 880 or at Jack London Square in Oakland. Or at Cesar Chavez High School, the Haight or on Post Street in San Francisco. Perhaps you were traveling, in Peru, Italy, Mexico, Japan, Honduras or Honolulu. You might have bought a T-shirt made by his company, Samurai Graphix, or peeped his graphic design work for corporate clients like Sega, MTV, Toyota and Nokia.

When roaming the streets in the San Antonio District people wouldn’t normally think of it as a place for cultural landmarks in Oakland. Well I didn’t at least, until I met up with local artist Chris Granillo at his compound to talk about the community of artist that surround him, future projects, and life as an artist.

This “ghetto palace” has been a home for artists for more than 20 years. “The guy who started the Griffin Company”, a lithograph etching press, made some of his prototype models in the space.  It is currently home to 4 artist, contains a studio, and a gallery space that is in the workings. “La Lucha studio” as Granillo calls it is a cultural space that is chicano oriented.
