EBALDC runs one of the largest Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs in the East Bay, and this year we're delighted to announce that by working with 105 volunteers, we prepared taxes for 1,190 low income families that received a total of over $1.7M in refunds!

Determined to get her parcel tax proposal in front of voters, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said Thursday she will re-introduce the $80-per-parcel tax measure to the City Council in the hopes of raising needed revenue for the city.

Unlike the first introduction, Quan said this time she will submit the tax proposal for a regular Council meeting and it will be a mail-in ballot measure.

The Oakland City Council is poised to put a new cannabis tax on the ballot that would give the council leverage to decide the final tax-rate, but the council can’t vote until Monday on Council Member Rebecca Kaplan’s last-minute proposal.

While many in the city are eager to see more money flowing into the city coffers, not everyone at the Thursday meeting liked the idea of the city taxing pot.
