For the 19th year in a row, Oakland hit the streets and broke records on Bike to Work Day.

Oakland saw 6 percent more riders than last year, setting a new all-time record. At Broadway and 27th Street, which has seen major improvements with new bikeways and signage, the number of people riding by on bikes this Bike to Work Day increased 40 percent from last year.

According to sponsor The East Bay Bicycle Coalition, over 17,000 riders commuting to work were counted at 143 energizer stations this morning.  That is a 22 %  increase in cyclists over 2011.  Mayor Jean Quan of Oakland rode 8 miles on her trusty electric bike from Eastmont Mall to City Hall, accompanied by a large contingent of riders.

To accommodate Caltrans’ plan for new construction for the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, AC Transit bus service to and from San Francisco will be halted from Friday evening, Feb. 17, to Tuesday morning, Feb. 21.

The last transbay bus allowed to use the bridge will be Line NXC, leaving the San Francisco Terminal at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Abdul Khan is one of 2,000 truck drivers, contracted to haul containers in and out of the recent Occupy Oakland target: The Port of Oakland.
