The Oakland Museum of California’s new exhibit, “Summoning Ghosts: the Art of Hung Liu,” is awesome, a must-see show--even for people who don’t normally go to museum showings. The show stands as a major undertaking, collecting canvases, sketchbooks, and photographs spanning four decades of work from the prolific artist and teacher.

DJ Platurn’s monthly DJ jamboree The 45 Session celebrated its third anniversary on Saturday. In case you just got here, The 45 Sessions’ “gotcha” is that it features nothing but 45 rpm records, thereby narrowing the field of music which can be played –and eliminating the need for vinyl emulation software.

“Fruitvale,” the debut film by Oakland director Ryan Coogler, has emerged as the 2013 Sundance Film Festival’s most buzzworthy entry. The film, a fictional account of the events leading up to the shooting death of Oscar Grant at the hands of a BART police officer at the Fruitvale station on New Years Day 2009, stars Michael B.

Oakland’s art scene is bubbling right now. The city was just named among the Top 12 nationally by ArtPlaces, which specifically noted the Downtown/Uptown area as being particularly artcentric. That’s cool, but what makes Oakland art hot is Oakland artists. It couldn’t happen without them.

As midnight nears on a Monday night at Disco Volante, Isaac Hayes’ “Ike’s Groove” sets a soulful, chilled vibe, courtesy of DJ Fflood. To the left of the turntable set-up, Reshawn “Bushmama” Goods lays seated on the floor, a paintbrush in her hand. Goods contemplates the canvas in front of her.
