For the 19th year in a row, Oakland hit the streets and broke records on Bike to Work Day.

Oakland saw 6 percent more riders than last year, setting a new all-time record. At Broadway and 27th Street, which has seen major improvements with new bikeways and signage, the number of people riding by on bikes this Bike to Work Day increased 40 percent from last year.

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland recently gathered to celebrate 2011’s bicycling victories, including 18 miles of new or improved bikeways, 292 new bicycle parking racks and a Safe Routes to School grant that will fund a valet bicycle parking station near 19th Street BART.

On Saturday, October 22, EBBC teamed up with Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, Jack London Square, and New Belgium Brewery to bring you the biggest celebration of the bicycle in regional history. Riders from all over the Bay rolled out to the waterfront for a terrific day of pedal-powered music, food, rides and more.

Some chickens, a friendly beard and a greasy handshake greet you and your ailed bike at Bike Man Dan’s community oriented shop.

His is a different business model: dedicated to recycling parts, Dan asks customers to pay their own price for his services. Such a model makes cycling affordable and gives more people the option to cycle.

Oaklavia invited Oaklanders to “come play in the streets” without cars on Sunday and come they did  - on bicycles and roller skates, in strollers and pedicabs. It was a great, sunny day to play in the streets.
