Although bike season is year round in Oakland, there are a lot of changes happening at local cycle shops that may inspire riders to dust off their bikes as the weather warms up. 

Several cycleries — including members of Oakland SPOKES and the East Bay Bike Coalition — are creating new ways for neighborhood bike enthusiasts to get involved in the next couple months.

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland recently gathered to celebrate 2011’s bicycling victories, including 18 miles of new or improved bikeways, 292 new bicycle parking racks and a Safe Routes to School grant that will fund a valet bicycle parking station near 19th Street BART.

On Saturday, October 22, EBBC teamed up with Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, Jack London Square, and New Belgium Brewery to bring you the biggest celebration of the bicycle in regional history. Riders from all over the Bay rolled out to the waterfront for a terrific day of pedal-powered music, food, rides and more.

The big events this weekend are remembrances, the 20th anniversary of the Oakland Firestorm and the Day of the Dead at OMCA. But for lots of fun, pedal over to PedalFest at Jack London Square or the final Bites off Broadway for 2011.

Lots of different stuff to do coming up in Oakland. It's a First Friday this week, so Uptown and Downtown will be hopping. The current forecast has the rains stopping by then -- let's hope the forecasters are right!
