Charcoal Park - located in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, Calif. - is being forced to close by its landlord. This means the hundreds of African-American artifacts, artwork, collectibles and more have nowhere to go. Owner Shirley Everett-Dicko is looking for a new home for these important pieces of black history.

So where are you shopping this weekend?  I'll be heading over to my local community farmer's market, one of the 4 or 5 phat beets produce has set up in North Oakland in the past 18 months.  If I lived in East Oakland, I'd be heading to the Oakland Food Connection's community farmers market, and if I lived in West Oakland, I'd be out at the Mandela Market or City Slicker Farms--or getting my grub box from People's Grocery.

People can for environmental reasons, to eat locally, reconnect with family recipes, preserve their garden's abundance, be self-sufficient, save money, or just because it tastes better!  If you are motivated to can but aren't sure where to start, this is the class for you.
