Oakland’s mayoral candidates provided a wide variety of responses. Some response were detailed, some were brief. Others were ambitious or focused more on the budget problems than voicing detailed solutions.

When asked why she is running for mayor, Jean Quan told Oakland Local, “I think that this city deserves to have someone who really wants to be mayor. Who really wants to be hands-on. Who is willing to put that kind of effort on a ground up basis and isn’t just using it as a stepping stone up or down in politics.”

For the next few days, we’ll be posting perspectives on two upcoming measures on the ballot in Oakland: one, Measure BB, would alter a 2004 parcel tax called Measure Y, which has provided funding to violence-prevention programs and the police department in Oakland.
