I'm honored to say that I've been invited to be part of an annual Stanford John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships program this coming week.  The topic of the event is “#Hashtagged: How Social Media are Revolutionizing the News" and the other speakers are from NPR, Google and Yahoo; we're going to be talking about the impact of social media on news, a subhect dear to my heart.

Need medical and dental care but have no money? Tomorrow kicks off a 4-day free program from Remote Area Medical to get medical services on a first-come, first served basis.  Last weekend, at a similar event in Sacramento, the group served over 3,600 local people over four days.

Most of us would probably like to know our neighbors better. Sal Bednarz actually did something about it. A year ago, Bednarz opened the Actual Cafe, a hip hang-out spot on the corner of San Pablo and Alcatraz in North Oakland .

There's something to be said for galvanizing support via a mob event: American Express' Small Business Saturday initiative garnered $1 million for Girls, Inc.  - through a Facebook "like" campaign - while simultaneously creating Internet-wide buzz for consumers to support small businesses today.

First you hear the thump of approaching party music. Then a cry from a bullhorn: "Love that right lane, people!"

A loud chorus of energetic shouts: "BIKE PARTY! Yeah!" Ding ding ding go dozens of bike bells ... and a torrent of nearly 200 happy bikers begins to sweep past.
