Tavon Frazier is a skinny 9-year-old squirming in front of his Styrofoam lunch tray. He's eaten most of his chicken taco and his friends, all wearing the navy polo shirts of East Oakland's Korematsu Discovery Academy, are wiggling around him, chewing on their flour tortillas and nibbling on baby carrots. The deal went down by the Berkeley Marina. Matt Markovich handed over several hundred dollars to a man in a van and drove away 70 pounds heavier.

“It was like Miami Vice contraband,” Markovich, 36, said recently while sitting at the dining room table in his cozy Oakland home.

When you see a rooftop bustling with activity, it’s usually because something is under construction. On this sunny Oakland roof, a group of young people working with soil and seedlings is also building something: food security, healthier communities, and a sustainable economy. They’re volunteers for Oakland-based food justice organization Planting Justice, founded earlier this year.
