A noted Italian composer living in the US, found reassurance amidst the chaos of contemporary Oakland when he discovered Peralta Hacienda, so he composed a piece about it.

Luciano Chessa's Come un'infanzia for guitar, violins, cello and viola, with theatrical elements, will fill the air and sizzle the stage at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in Fruitvale on June 11, 3:30-4:30 pm, in a free concert for the community sponsored by the Clorox Foundation.

"I could have not written a piece that would not look, hopeful, at Fruitvale now. Half a meditation on history and half a gentle utopia, Come un'infanzia is a piece on Oakland's infancy, on my infancy, on infancy, period,"

The third concert in the Oakland City Center’s Summer Sounds series will feature the talented band Dynamic. The group – which blends hip-hop, rock and soul – was named “One of the Best Hip Hop Bands of the Bay” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

As a poet, I've been wanting to offer more poetry workshops through Oakland Word. As we approach our final round of classes, I've remedied this with two exciting new workshops just on poetry -- one for beginners and one for poets of any level.

The teacher's strike didn't have Oakland parents scrambling for child care options, but this summer certainly will. Oakland has consistently cut funding for programs that educate and care for children when public schools are closed.
