The Latino youth group, 67 Sueños (67 Dreams), plans to host a fundraiser this Saturday, May 19, to raise $5,000 to paint a healthcare-related mural in the Fruitvale district.

May Day is traditionally a holiday celebrating springtime where people in many countries take to the streets to celebrate spring. In Oakland, California on May 1, 2012, thousands of Bay Area residents and progressive organizations turned out in an impressive march full of people celebrating their backgrounds and cultures while pushing for social change.

Although the Fruitvale-based Centro de Joventud (youth center), was recently notified that its funding may be eliminated, the center is not giving up and is using the next two weeks to appeal the decision.

Pacific Steel Casting of Berkeley recently fired 200 workers for their inability to provide social security numbers.

According to the Oakland Tribune, late last year Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requested an audit of the factory demanding that all undocumented workers be fired from the plant.

Speak out against police-ICE collusion in Arizona and at home

 What: Religious leaders, community residents and organizations will hold a large procession and protest rally against Arizona’s discriminatory SB 1070 as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco conducts a hearing on the controversial law. Advocates will also draw connections between the law and the Federal “S-Comm” program that creates a new collusion between police and ICE.

Sept. 25 - As I write this, some 350 people - most members of the Bay Area's Chinese-American community - are undertaking an emotional voyage to Angel Island. Many of the folks participating had ancestors who were detained at the island's immigration station in the early 20th century, but had never before visited the site.
