People began lining up around 3 p.m. at the Paramount Theater on Saturday for the 6 p.m. final appearance of Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West’s book tour for "The Rich and The Rest of Us." About a week before, Smiley described their new book project over the phone as practical and empirically grounded.

Oakland Local is seeking a smart and fast working News Associate to work with the Editor and Managing Editor to produce simple stories and briefs for the website. News Associate will work on deadline, producing three to five stories per week from press releases, community news sources and calendar listings. Stories will average 15-300 words in length.

Since 2007, PUEBLO has operated a program called Urban Youth Harvest, employing young people to harvest the excess fruit growing in back yards throught Oakland and donating it to low-income seniors and others lacking fresh produce in their diet.

But this year, Urban Youth Harvest morphed into a much more expansive program called Youth Greening Oakland.

It's been a long four years since Krystle Monroe had full-time employment.

"Sometimes I can't even believe it myself," she said standing next to her husband at a recent East Oakland job fair. "I've been sending out resumes, going to these job fairs, following up on tips, but nothing has worked out."
