Oakland Unified and eight other California school districts sought a waiver Thursday from the federal "No Child Left Behind" law by submitting their own plan for measuring a school's success that takes into account students' social and emotional well being and school culture along with students' scores on academic tests.

Two years ago, a student lost his life when a chase and altercation with police officers turned deadly. 

As a result of that event, the police force that works for the Oakland Unified School District has been required to submit yearly reports of complaints filed against its officers.

A data entry error has caused Oakland Unified School District to budget $7.6 million more than it meant to for the next school year and now, realizing the mistake, it is asking schools to subtract that amount, or about $50,000 per school, from next year's planning.

For Oakland public schools, the 2012 year was one of bold new initiatives, as well as widely protested school closings, of national awards for exemplar teaching and of people losing faith in the schools and thus enrolling their kids elsewhere.
