On June 24, Judge Robert M. Freedman gave outgoing City Attorney John Russo a going-away present: An affirmative ruling on the Fruitvale gang injunction.

As is his wont, Russo sent out a tweet announcing victory after an unprecedented eight-month long court battle.

This Monday, June 12, Johannes Mehserle is going to be released from jail after serving 11 months of his 18 month sentence for the murder of Oscar Grant.

For many people in Oakland, Mehserle's release is unconscionable and his going free while Grant lies dead is an unpardonable occurrence. Others feel Mehserle has served the time the court decreed and it's time to move on.

Rumors have swirled recently over whether Johannes Mehserle, the former Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police officer convicted last summer of involuntary manslaughter in the death of an unarmed Oscar Grant, had already been released from prison. Those rumors have turned out to be false. Mehserle, however, may walk out of prison some time in June.

If there was an all-star team for community organizers, Tony Coleman would be a front-runner for Oakland's MVP for 2010.

Despite maintaining a low-profile -- Coleman is much more likely to be wearing a hoodie than a business suit and gators, and you won't find him cozying up to elected officials in luxury boxes during A's games or schmoozing at $1000-per-plate galas -- he's been quite visible where it really counts, in the streets. Refreshingly down to earth, he nevertheless speaks, and takes action, with drive, fervor and an earnest commitment to the causes he's passionate about: justice, accountability, unity, economic sustainability, anti-violence and community empowerment.
