To raise awareness and educate all Alameda County residents about the social factors that impact poverty, the Alameda County - Oakland Community Action Partnership will host the Walk to End Poverty, this Saturday, May 19, around Oakland's Lake Merritt.

People began lining up around 3 p.m. at the Paramount Theater on Saturday for the 6 p.m. final appearance of Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West’s book tour for "The Rich and The Rest of Us." About a week before, Smiley described their new book project over the phone as practical and empirically grounded.

When I was in the third grade, I had trouble reading. I mixed up letters and couldn’t spell to save my life. I soon found myself in special education courses. Most of the other students who were tracked in these classes were also poor boys of color. None of us were there because we simply failed to “try.”

Oakland's 5th Annual Walk Against Poverty is coming up fast. The walk, and a following community fair, will take place at Lake Merritt this Saturday, May 22.

It is sponsored by the Oakland Community Action Partnership (OCAP) along with the United Way of the East Bay.
