In this era of viral video, is taping a live video interview with a well-respected journalist and posting it on your web site and on YouTube a way to get good visibility for your message?  It worked well for The Green Sangha, whose parody on banning plastic bags has racked up 192,000 page views on YouTube since being posted before Thanksgiving. However,  it doesn't seem to be working so well for departing Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums.

Ron Dellums sent out his resignation statement yesterday, letting every one know that after 35 years of government service, the last 5 as the Mayor of Oakland, he was done. While Dellums is an amazing man, who had a great record in Congress, where he was known for  being both principled and smart, what is going to be his legacy in Oakland?

One of the challenges in evaluating the administration of an Oakland mayor in these days and times is that twelve years after the passage of Measure X, residents and local media outlets (new and old) still are not certain exactly what a “strong mayor” is supposed to do and be responsible for.

Remember when at least one overenthusiastic Don Perata supporter was crowing that the former State Senator was going to cakewalk into the office of Mayor of the City of Oakland in 2010? Hasn’t worked out quite that way, has it? Instead of a Perata walkover, it is possible that instead, this year might end up being one of the most competitive Oakland mayoral races in a generation or more.
