With school drawing to a close, most students eagerly anticipate the summer break. However, most Juniors face a final hurdle before then.

All across the country, 11th graders are preparing to take the SAT, SAT II or ACT. For some, it will be the second time around.

In the past, many parents avoided Oakland Public Schools.  The schools had a horrible reputation, worsened by budget controversies and the eventual takeover of the school district by state authorities. However, local control has returned to the district and test scores have shown continual improvement at many schools.

Last week, the 2010 California Standards Test showed that the number of Oakland elementary students testing as proficient or advanced rose by 8 percent in both English Language Arts and Math, while the five-year growth in those categories totals 15 and 20 percent, respectively. In addition, due to the economy, many families are removing their kids from private schools and giving Oakland public and charter schools another look.

Clorox has launched the 2010 Power A Bright Future contest - a school grant program. Four grants will be awarded ranging from $20 to $50,000.

Will an Oakland school win one this year?

Last year, the program received more than 4,000 entries and is expected to receive more in 2010.

Oakland – May 24, 2010 – Negotiations between the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and the Oakland Education Association (OEA) came to an abrupt close when the teachers’ union announced during the parties’ May 24th session that it would not continue bargaining. The decision left little hope the sides would agree on a new contract by the target date of June 1.
