This week many Oakland citizens became the victims of a bitter contract dispute between AC Transit drivers and their unions. Several “sick outs” were staged during the week which effected people’s commutes.

After imposing a cost-slashing contract about 20 percent of the drivers called in sick.

Oaklavia invited Oaklanders to “come play in the streets” without cars on Sunday and come they did  - on bicycles and roller skates, in strollers and pedicabs. It was a great, sunny day to play in the streets.

The BART Police Department now has a new police chief. Kenton Rainey, the person selected to lead BART’s 296-member police force, officially took command as Chief of Police today.

BART, AC Transit and the MTC are holding registration events for youth and seniors to register for TransitLink Cards.

Youth and senior discounts are available, but customers must apply in person for a specially encoded youth or senior card.

As the number of cyclists on the streets of Oakland has grown, cycling deaths remain rare.  Only one cyclist was killed in all of 2008.  Waves of concern recently radiated through the cycling community when two cyclists were killed in collisions in less than one month.

AC Transit held two public meetings Wednesday to discuss the possibility the bus agency will declare a fiscal emergency and undergo a second round of service cuts.

Transit staff have proposed three options to cut an additional 8.4 percent of service, including eliminating weekend service on all but major corridor bus routes, reducing late-night services or making across-the-board cuts to the frequency of multiple lines.

As a part of most peoples daily routine in Oakland a constant barrage of bumps and holes are ravaging their tires. Whether be it bike, car, or bus it affects everyone.

A select few people in the FunkTown neighborhood took some initiative and filled a gigantic pothole on 8th ave with bricks.

May 13 dawned cool and overcast. But the sun shone from the smiles of the enthusiastic greeters at energizer stations set up for the Bay Area’s 16th annual Bike to Work Day. Cyclists received cheers, goodie bags and snacks to encourage them on their ride.
