This Saturday, skip dessert after dinner because you won't want to miss a moment of Rosie Lugosi's sparkling performance as she headlines Glitterati – an evening of fabulous femme performances following the Femme2010 conference. This year, Oakland is the site of the third bi-annual conference, hosted by the Femme Collective at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Oakland. Creating conferences and performances since 2006, Femme Collective organizers saw the need for femmes to have a space to discuss and explore their experience as a stand-alone queer identity – outside of simply being “a queer person that looks feminine.” Saturday's conference will be followed by an evening of burlesque, drag, belly dancing, spoken word and stand-up. Headlining Glitterati – at the Oakland Operahouse, 630 Third St. Oakland – is Lugosi, hailing from Manchester, England. An award-winning performer, she has appeared at events across Europe and the U.S. (including Femme 2008 in Chicago). Joining Lugosi will be more than 20 performers from every corner of the country, including several from right here in Oakland. One of those participating is Titland – an Oakland performance group comprised of Cherry Poppins, Starr69 and Kentucky Fried Woman. Each a solo performer in her own right, the three together create a thrilling blend of drag, burlesque and tap dancing. The wife and wife team of Amelia Mae Paradise have been leading the Bawdy Body Dance Workshop Series in San Francisco and Oakland and will be gracing the Glitterati stage as the “vigilante vaudevillian teasers” that they are. And if you think you've seen belly dancing before, you've never seen it performed like this. Oakland taught Heaven Mousalem claims the sacred feminine and inspires the self-love that she found for herself through belly dancing. Send the ladies of Glitterati a shout out on Facebook.
