On October 23, the ILWU and many other organizations held a demonstration in Oakland and shut down the port for a day in support of justice for Oscar Grant in the upcoming Nov 5 sentencing of his murderer, former BART officer Johannes Mehserle.  The union is showing solidarity with Grant’s family, who are asking for the maximum prison term for  Mehserle. Hundreds of protestors showed up for the rally.
