For the past six weeks, Oakland Local reporters and educators have spent two days a week teaching and learning with Oakland youth. We worked with several talented and energetic high school students at the East Oakland Youth Development Center, conducting classes and workshops in writing and photography, tools of journalism that can give voice to the voiceless.

Below are photographs taken by the Oakland youth who participated in our “Safe Routes to School” program, highlighting many of the barriers and triumphs Oakland students face in simply finding their way to education.

This story and the entire Education Voices series were made possible through the support of The California Endowment. Our student reporters for this series are participants in programs at The East Oakland Youth Development Center in East Oakland. Many thanks to the Endowment and the Center for the support of this program, and to our wonderful coaches, trainers and student reporters.
