The great thing about games as fundraisers is that, even if you don’t win the game, you still win.

The San Pablo Avenue Golden Gate Improvement Association (SPAGGIA) is holding just such a win-win opportunity at the Actual Café, 6334 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. Appropriate to the bike-loving venue, the theme is “Bicycle Bingo.” Proceeds benefit SPAGGIA–and of course, the neighborhood and all who inhabit, frequent, or even occasionally visit it. More details on the event may be viewed here.

In addition to beer, having fun with neighbors, finding out what’s going on and how to get involved, and raising money for what has become a community institution, Bicycle Bingo also features more tangible prizes and even, rumor has it, a ride-able bike-powered bingo hopper.

It is perhaps not surprising that the neighborhood group associated with the San Pablo Arts District has clever ideas for projects and tackling causes as well as fundraising–it is, after all, a creative place populated with creative folks.

Some may not know how much SPAGGIA does for the Golden Gate neighborhood (including the most interesting and beneficial way to deal with graffiti: commissioning public murals) or that it has been around since 1984. In any case, Thursday night is an excellent opportunity to find out more while having a fun night out in a great neighborhood.

Anyone who would like to volunteer for this fun event or join in other SPAGGIA projects is encouraged to contact the organization at
