I remember, with great fondness, playing the summer reading game at the little library in the small town where I grew up. It was a big homemade board game, and each child had their own piece that we got to move around the board as we read books and gathered prizes.

Becoming a children’s librarian 10 years ago meant I got to relive this fun part of my youth, but from the other side of the table. Now I can see how Summer Reading isn’t just a fun game for children, it also helps them avoid the infamous (to librarians and educators, at least) “summer reading slide” that can occur over summer break from school and encourages parents to read to their youngest children, priming them to have strong early literacy skills as they begin school.

Summer Reading runs from June 15 – Aug. 10 this year at the Oakland Public Library, and we offer summer games and prizes for all ages. And yes, all ages includes you!

This year Oakland Public Library’s Summer Reading theme is Reading is Soooo0ooo Delicious!

Children can play the children’s Summer Reading Game, which encourages them to read (or be read to) for at least eight hours over the summer – earning prizes along the way. In addition to individual prizes awarded to all readers, there are grand raffle prizes, including a Fairyland Annual Pass and an iPad.

Each Oakland Public Library location will be hosting a variety of special events, all free and open to all! Please visit our Summer Reading site to see what’s going on for children at a library near you!

For teenagers, we have the Teen Summer Passport Program, which gives teens the opportunity to earn passport stamps for doing any number of things, including exploring Bay Area Hot Spots like museums, pools and skate parks, writing reviews, attending library programs, or volunteering. Teen grand raffle prizes include an iPad Mini, an iPod Touch, and a computer.

You can see all the events for teens this summer on the OPL Teen website.

As for you all, don’t worry, I didn’t forget you. You get to play too!

Adults can participate in Adult Summer Reading at any library location, where you can sign up and earn raffle tickets for writing book reviews or using library resources. This year, to go with our delicious theme, each location will be collecting food for the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and donating food helps you earn raffle tickets.

With these raffle tickets you are entered to win a variety of prizes, including gift cards and a Kindle HD Fire.

Speaking of the food bank, the library is partnering again this year with the City of Oakland’s Human Services Department and the Alameda County Community Food Bank, to provide free lunches to children and teens throughout the summer at many of our locations.

All summer long, throughout the city, the library will have fun events celebrating reading and food. We really hope to see you there, winning prizes!
