This is my favorite time of year and it starts in the witching month of October.  There is a different kind of chill in the air and you can feel the seasons turning even if you can see it.   It’s time for pumpkins and vampires and zombies oh my!  Or if you prefer to get tarted up, start planning your costumes now!  Only three more weeks left in this fabulous month so soak each day up!  This weekend we are going HAM!  We start with the deciding Game 5 between the Oakland A’s and the Detroit Tigers, groove at Vida! and Trap Safari, kick up our heels at Life is Living and the Stompede Prequel and end the weekend with the one year anniversary of Vibrate.  Yeah it’s going down like that in the Bay this weekend… afterall it is October!!!!  See you out and about this weekend it’s gonna be hella fun 😉

Awaken Cafe
429 Broadway, Oakland
8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
$7 – All Ages

On Thursday October 10th The Oakland Poetry Slam & WIDE-Open-Mic returns to Downtown’s dopest little venue – Awaken Cafe. We’re thrilled to bring you, our fabulous audience to the great new space with the extra tasty vittles and thirst quenching drinks (Sandwiches, Salads, Beer, Wine, Yay!).

If you haven’t been to the show in a while then you should know we’ve flipped the show on it’s head. These days we’re starting with the Poetry Slam, hosted by Nazelah. In this competitive poetry reading you’ll see up to 8 poets vie with their own, original work to wow the judges and audience alike. At the end of the Slam with the top three finishers will walk away with $50 in cash money.

As always we’ll also have our patented WIDE-Open-Mic (singers, comics, MCs, storytellers, etc. encouraged to sign up). This portion of the evening is hosted by Dre and you never know who’s gonna drop in and hit the mic. It’s always a great time and, if you’re just getting started or have something new to bring to the mic, is the perfect place for you. The water’s warm… come on in. Plus, if you sign up to perform you get a special discount at the door. We’ll have space for at least 8 performers here but you want to get your name on the list early because once the clock strikes 10 we’re done.

About our feature – Sheri-D Wilson has 8 collections of poetry; her most recent, Goddess Gone Fishing for a Map of the Universe. Her collection, Re:Zoom (2005, Frontenac House), won the 2006 Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry, and was shortlisted for the CanLit Award. Music is Life ♥

A new party brought to you by LadyRyan singing and spinning all night!

“One of the main reasons that I absolutely LOVE singing and dj’ing is for the incredible exchange of energy that happens on the dance floor and in our hearts. I am an antennae. I tune in to you and you to me. I watch the subtle head nods, i feel the the swell as the music takes people to new heights. When I sing I look at you in the eye, your soul to mine and heal you and heal me. This is my gift that I have to have the courage to share. I do and I will and I GIVE THANKS.

This Friday at The Legionnaire Saloon in #Oakland, my intention is to take you there! Music is life and life is living! SPREAD THE WORD! ♥ music”
