The Oakland Public Library (OPL) is celebrating National Poetry Month in April 2014 with an exciting building-wide display at the Main Library, 125 14th Street in downtown Oakland.

Climbing the building’s stairs generate a new experience as poems are displayed on all of the staircases, giving visitors to the library a chance to experience poetry as they move from floor to floor. Posters of concrete poetry, where the shape or design of the poem is informed by the content (like the graphic above), are also on display. Everyone is invited to immerse themselves in poetry from the library’s top floor to the basement level. Photographers are welcome.

The featured poems include those by the Oakland Youth Poet Laureates, in celebration of the April 7 deadline for the citywide contest. Other featured poets include celebrated children’s poets and California poets, including California Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.
