Funds raised by this production will benefit the California Coalition for Women Prisoners ( CCWP is a grassroots social justice organization, with members inside and outside the prison system, that challenges the institutional violence imposed on women, transgender people, and communities of color by the prison industrial complex (PIC). The organization sees the struggle for racial and gender justice as central to dismantling the PIC and prioritizes the leadership of the people, families, and communities most impacted in building this movement.

Hailed by The New York Times as “funny” and “poignant” and by the Daily News as “intelligent” and “courageous,” The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Eve Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage, and excitement of women’s experiences. Based on hundreds of interviews Ensler conducted with women, the play addresses women’s sexuality, selfhood, the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse, and a host of other issues facing women today. By addressing these issues, The Vagina Monologues seeks to spark a new conversation about and with women.

The Vagina Monologues is now a part of a movement. The V-Day campaign ( works to end violence against women on a global scale, in part through community productions that facilitate community, conversation, and fundraising.

The Vagina Monologues are sponsored in part by the Human Awareness Institute (HAI). For more than 45 years HAI has been a pioneer and leader in promoting positive and healthy adult relationships and sexuality. Garden House been a staple in Oakland for years, with Karen Sok behind the counter mixing those salads (one of the items that they are known for) and making those lunches for all her regulars.  Recently it has come under new ownership, kinda.  Kim’s daughter Terry and her partner Julia along with Karen have become the trinity of owners of this local spot nestled deep in the heart of downtown Oakland.   Garden House has hard core regulars who have been eating lunch there forever.

Karen and Terry Sok

Lucky for them the menu and prices has stayed relatively the same with only a few newly added items.  This was my first time visiting Garden House since I have been in Oakland.

Garden House is a lunch spot with minimal furniture or decoration.  But for a joint like this you don’t go for the decor and ambiance you go for the delicious food and the great service.  I went with a friend during lunch and although we had to wait a bit to get to the counter to order it was a pleasant wait.  We went all in and tried the turkey sandwich, the Teriyaki Chicken Bowl and the Spinach, Fettuccine, Chicken Salad.  The sandwich was just that a sandwich, nothing particularly special about it.  However, on the menu it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is… a turkey sandwich.  So if you are a purist about your sandwiches and want what you could make at your house then this is the sandwich for you.

Spinach, Fettuccine and Chicken Salad

Next up was the Spinach, Fettuccine Chicken Salad which was delish.  The mixture of textures: crunchy salad, seasoned pasta and thick slices of grilled chicken really gives your mouth a yum infusion.  Not only was it a hearty meal, it really is filling, so much so that we were able to take some of it home with us for dinner!  Although I highly recommend trying this salad I will say that the next time I go I am trying the Cesar Salad.  Watching Kim mix up those Cesars as we were waiting for our order was mouthwatering.  They looked so damn good!

Finally our last dish was my personal favorite.  The Chicken Teriyaki Bowl was unbelievable flavorful.  In fact it was so good that I didn’t want to share, even though I wasn’t the one who ordered it.  I was totally chickenbowlbogarting the Chicken Bowl and feeling totally unashamed about it.  The chicken is grilled to a tender perfection mixed with grilled onions, carrots and zucchini topped with a teriyaki sauce with a little bit of bite to it.  It was simple and sublime.  I love it when restaurants do simple dishes extremely well and Garden House did this dish perfectly.  If I lived near downtown Oakland this would be my everyday go to spot and menu item.  Yup that is how good it was.  So if you work in downtown Oakland, are visiting downtown Oakland or feel like driving to downtown Oakland and are looking for a lunch spot, I highly recommend Garden House (try the Chicken Bowl!)
