Remember 1989? Forget the Berlin Wall coming down! It was the year of the Bay Area World Series, with the Oakland A’s versus the San Francisco Giants. There was a whole lot o’ shaking going on, and the Mandela Freeway collapsed as well as a section of the Bay Bridge. But the A’s won! We danced in the streets! And being from Oakland was something.

It’s flashback time. This Saturday, July 19, will commemorate this history with a 1989 throwback tailgate party!

The A’s will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1989 World Series win and everybody who’s anybody will be there. Hundreds are expected. You are also invited by the organizers, and Oaklandish.

DSC_0207-Kid-AsThere will be an 80s dress-up contest, with the winner receiving a $50 gift card to Oaklandish stores. DJ Criddy, who also works at Oaklandish, and eazeYOURmind will provide the tunes, including hits from the 80s and early 90s. And there will be a cornhole contest with Oaklandish giveaways, including limited-edition event shirts.

“All A’s fans are welcome at the tailgates, and we usually sponsor them with BaseballOakland, explained Aaron Higgins, the Operations Director of Oaklandish. “This year, we’ve added Save Oakland Sports and Oakland Fan Pledge as community partners. Since the weather didn’t cooperate for opening day this year, we thought the ’89 throwback game would be a great opportunity for another celebration of the A’s baseball dynasty and the best fans in baseball.”

Want to attend? Go to the Oakland Coliseum (7000 Coliseum Way) and gather in Lot A. The event should start with music at 2:30 p.m. and will end at about 5:30, so ticket holders can go to the game.

At the game, members of the 1989 team will be honored. That includes: Lance Blankenship, Todd Burns, Jose Canseco, Storm Davis, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Gallego, Dave Henderson, Rickey Henderson, Carney Lansford, Mike Moore, Dave Parker, Ken Phelps, Tony Phillips, Dave Stewart, and Curt Young, along with Manager Tony La Russa and Coaches Merv Rettenmund and Tommie Reynolds.

Next month, Oaklandish Presents will host the Fairyland for Grownups benefit on August 15. Proceeds from this event will help Children’s Fairyland keep the admissions price low or free for Oakland kids. For more information and updates on Fairyland for Grownups, check the “events” page of the Oaklandish website.

The in-store ticket sales for this benefit event have sold out, but there will be additional tickets for sale online only on July 25, starting at 10 a.m. No tickets will be sold at the door. Follow Oaklandish on Twitter (@0aklandish) or Instagram (@OaklandishHQ) for the link to purchase these last-chance tickets.
