It has been a hot minute since my last Weekend in the YaY! Area but the wait was sooooooo worth it!.  I took a brief hiatus while Oakland Local was being redesigned.  If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new Oakland Local make sure you take some time to do so.  It is looking absolutely stunning!

I decided to take this moment to interview a Bay Area icon, the lovely and talented Ms. Lady Lana.   Lana has always been an inspiration to me.  She has been holding it down for the LGBTQ  community since 2003 and I have always been in awe of her commitment to holding space for queer people of color communities.  So read up about her then check out what is going on this Thanksgiving.

Plenty of places and events to work off your holiday meals on the dancefloor.  It feels good to be back!  Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

Ms. Lady Lana in Palm Springs

Miz Chris [MC]:  Where are you from?

Ms. Lady Lana [LL]:  I was born and raised right here in the Bay Area..Richmond, CA.

[MC]:  What was the first party you ever promoted? And why did you choose to start promoting events?

[LL]:   The first party I ever promoted was my birthday party at Cables Reef; that was the only gay club in Oakland back in 2003.  I chose to start promoting events because I knew that God has blessed me with the gift of getting people together, and I love to entertain people.  I truly do (love entertaining) and I started singing in the Cable Reef Shows first, and then told myself, I can do this too and that’s where Lady Lana and Coochielicious was born.

[MC]:  What other things do you do besides produce and promote events?

From the Bleu Sugar Show

[LL]:  In addition to being a promoter, I am also a Minister, a Sunday School teacher for the little kids, a community organizer and event planner for at risk youth and their families.  I am a singer/songwriter and a mom.

[MC]:  What is the most positive impact you feel you have made on your community either in your party promotions or you other work?

[LL]:  My most positive impact has been my community events for the kids. I got really tired of seeing my African American young men slaughtered like animals…so I decided to do something about it..I started taking them to San Quentin to scare them…having PEACE parties to show them that THEY COULD all get along and I also did/do Talent Shows..Treasure Hunts and Put The Guns Down block parties for all the kids in the city of Richmond.

IMG_7170[MC]:  When is your next event and what can the audience expect?

People can expect me to do a party for the older crowd now as well as my first play, coming in 2015. I will forever give back to the kids in my community as well as spread the word about how GOD adores Gay People.

You can catch the fabulous Ms. Lady Lana this weekend at the Cables Reef Reunion.  You can get all the pertinent details including the when and where by visiting the FB invite.
